A Letter to My Niece On Her Eighth Birthday

How am I supposed to write this without sobbing?

Oh, that's right.

I CAN'T. Your auntie is an emotional W R E C K.

I feel like I just took my sweet nieces Year 7 photos. Time flies when you're having fun, I guess!

Really, it seems like you were just 5 years old the other day– a little blonde bob of hair that was just obsessed with bubbles, My Little Pony & leading the way to The Tippy Toe Inn in Chaseburg. To be completely fair, you probably would still lead the pack, with me and your Uncle Augie in tow ;) But now? You're a freckle-faced, sassy pants, hockey playing turd and I couldn't be more proud of you.

You'll probably be a lot older than eight years old by the time you actually read this. Does the internet still even exist? Please let me know if they've made a serum that makes dogs live forever, because I'm waiting on that to happen.

I am so proud of you & I hope you've remembered me saying that. From *always* speaking your mind, to how active you choose to be, your amazing ability to remember every Rocky quote I teach you, to your big. big giggly heart.

From Baby Grace, Toddler Grace, Kiddo Grace and beyond, I promise to say "I love you" & "I'm proud of you" even when you don't say it back to me ;) It's okay. You're only 7 and a HALF (as you said to me last week. Super sassy emphasis on the half) and it's not cool to say it right now, but sooner or later you'll realize why it's important.

Alright, booger breath. It's time for me to stop sobbing over my keyboard because it's time to go to your eighth birthday party. Ugh. I'm crying. Your mom is crying. Grandma is DEFINITELY crying. WE'RE ALL CRYING. We aren't ready for this, but I know you are. You have so much of life to look forward to, sweet pea, and I can't wait to show you more.

Thank you for being the first bean to make me an Auntie. It's the biggest privilege I've ever had.

You are strong. You are kind. You are important. & I love you.

Love, Auntie Haley

At the end, I made Augie snag a few portraits of us together. Selfishly, they are my favorite. <3
